Socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and gender are three important dimensions of identity. Explain how each of these dimensions might impact children's learning from either a child's or an adult's perspective.

Instances of bias and discrimination based on sex and gender exist in all realms of society. Provide one or more examples of each of the following as they pertain to learning environments and education: gender-role stereotyping, gender bias in the curriculum, and sex discrimination. How might caring and knowledgeable adults prevent each from being a part of learning environments?

This week you have been considering the ways in which developing a sense of community in learning settings impacts children's growth and ability to learn. Based on the theories and strategies of Johnson and Johnson, explain the relationship between learning environments that have a sense of community and children's ability to grow and learn.

Write a minimum 5 pages reflection critical analysis' essay entitled “Is morality relative or are there objective moral truths?

Write a minimum 5 pages reflection critical analysis' essay entitled “Is morality relative or are there objective moral truths?” This essay should explore the ethical, scientific, historic and socio-cultural dimensions of the readings. You have to read two readings (links you will find below the assignment description), one written by Ruth Benedict, “The Case for Moral Relativism” and a second written by Louis P. Pojman entitled “The Case Against Moral Relativism.”
What position do you hold regarding the essay’s question? Do you agree or disagree with the positions stated in the two readings? In order to prove your thesis make reference to the required readings from Unit 1 and 2, to the Instructor’s Lecture, as well as to two readings included in this assignment. In the Instructor’s Lecture you have an additional bibliography.

In your essay you should:
1. Use both readings as well as the rest of the required readings included in the Learning Modules.
2. Give answers to the following questions:
1. Regarding Benedict’s paper:
1. Is Benedict correct in saying that our culture is “but one entry in a long series of possible adjustments”? What are the implications of this statement?
2. Can we separate the descriptive (or fact-stating) aspect of anthropological study from the prescriptive (evaluative) aspect of evaluating cultures? Are there some independent criteria by which we can say that some cultures are better than others? Can you think how this project might begin?
3. What are the implications of Benedict's claim that morality is simply whatever a culture deems normal behavior? Is this a satisfactory equation? Can you apply it to the institution of slavery or the Nazi policy of anti-Semitism?
4. What is the significance of Benedict’s statement, “The very eyes with which we see the problem are conditioned by the long traditional habits of our own society”? Can we apply the conceptual relativism embodied in this statement to her own position? (taken form Pojman L.P., Vaughn L., The Moral Life, New York 2007, p. 165.)
b. Regarding Pojman’s paper:

1.    Is Pojman correct in thinking most American students tend to be moral relativists? If he is, why is this? What is the attraction of relativism? If he’s not correct, explain your answer.
2. Explain the difference between subjective ethical relativism and conventionalism.
3. Sometimes people argue that since there are no universal moral truths, each culture’s morality is as good as every other, so we ought not to interfere in its practices. Assess this argument.
4. Does moral relativism have a bad effect on society? Reread the tape-recorded conversation between serial murderer Ted Bundy and one of his victims (pages 171-172) in which Bundy attempts to justify the murder of his victim on the basis of the idea that all moral values are subjective. Analyze Bundy's discussion. How would the relativist respond to Bundy's claim that relativism justifies rape and murder? What do you think? Why? (taken form Pojman L.P., Vaughn L., The Moral Life, New York 2007, pp. 190-191.)

Short Creative Essay

During the Fall quarter, among the issues we discussed were cultural myths and the cultural roots of “common sense” As we grow within a particular environment and culture we gradually develop a strongly embedded picture of “how the world works”. Our perceptions are shaped by our expectations and our thinking and behaviors are molded and constrained by our assumptions. What happens when you find yourself suddenly in a situation where the old rules apparently no longer apply? How do we experience the shift? How do you respond? Can you adapt?

This situation is one that to various degrees we all have or will confront. History presents us with examples from the Native Americans encountering the conquistadors to Hitler's implementing his “final solution” upon assimilated Jews. Consider Plato's philosopher when he first emerges from the cave. Literature and film have found this a rich vein to mine... from Shakespeare to James Cameron.

This assignment is to write a short story in which a character experiences a dislocation of expectations. Assumptions, expectations, shared values are suddenly gone. You are free to choose any context from your story.... an internal family drama to a sudden translocation to another galaxy. The common thread is to establish the assumptions, disrupt them and explore the consequences. I'd say 5 pages would be about right.

Gubernatorial Campaign plan_ Texas

NOTE: Please take this assignment seriously. Even if you do not agree with the positions this persons should adopt in order to win, you need to present them in a way that will enable Jane “Bitzi” Johnson Miller to win his election. Your job is to show me that you can develop a winning campaign for this candidate in this state.

Congratulations! You have just been hired to organize and manage the 2014 Gubernatorial Campaign for Jane “Bitzi” Johnson Miller. She is the granddaughter of former governor Joe “Big Daddy” Johnson (Governor in a fictional Texas from 1954-1958) and a conservative Republican. She was born and raised in west Texas in a ranch. Divorced, with two grown children, she started her own software company in Dallas in1993- she sold it to Dell in 2010 for $2.5 million. Based on what you know about the history, geography, economy and political culture of Texas, advise “Bitzi” Johnson Miller on how she should run hercampaign. Based on the lectures, course readings and an analysis of the distribution of presidential and gubernatorial votes in 2010 (http://www.texastribune.org/texas-politics/2010-general-election/2010-texas-governors-race-maps/) develop acampaign plan that addresses the following questions (answer the questions in your paper, not just listing responses 1 through 5):

1. Where (in what regions of the state) is she likely to do well? Where will she have problems?

2. In which regions and political cultures are people most likely to vote? Will the issues she focuses on vary by region or part of the state?

3. Which ideological (conservative or liberal), ethnic (black, white or Hispanic) and economic (poor, wealthy or middle class) groups are likely to support her?

4. Identify at least three issues that will be important to your campaign.

5. If you hear a rumor that your opponent was involved in an incidence of domestic violence (a dispute with his wife), but no charges were filed. Would you make that a campaign issue? Why or why not?

Please find and read three articles on the election between Rick Perry and Bill White (Governor, 2010). Based on what you read in those three articles and your responses to the four questions above, evaluate “Bitzi’s” chances of becoming the next Governor of Texas?

Your Paper should include (Total of 5-6 pages minimum 4 pages of text):

Title Page (title of paper, date, class and your name)

Picture of your candidate (download a picture of what you think “Bitzi” Johnson Miller would look like)

Body of the Paper: Introduction: Introductory paragraph describing the candidate.

Cultural and Regional Support: Her likely strength among the different historic political cultures (traditionalistic, moralistic and individualistic) and geographic regions of Texas.

Demographic Support: Section describing key groups (ideological, racial and economic) likely to vote for her and why.

Campaign Themes: Present three issues that will be the central focus of your campaign and explain why you selected those issues and not others.

Win or Lose? Evaluation of chances of winning based on the rest of the paper and at least three articles discussing the 2010 Texas Governor’s race.

Be sure to use the categories noted above as subheadings to organize your paper!!!
