The term paper will be worth 25% of your final grade. This assignment
should be approximately 4 pages in length (typed, double spaced, 12pt, Times
New Roman font, one inch margins). Any deviations from these specifications
will not be accepted. Writing style, grammar and typos can affect your grade
and I am very strict here. Be sure to proofread your work before submitting it.
If you are having difficulty, consult the Rutgers-Newark writing center as
needed: http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~nwc.
The paper is due in hardcopy in class on November 25. No late papers will be
accepted, students are given enough notice about the assignment to turn it in
early if need be.
It will be clear by the end of this course that correctional policy is often
not grounded in empirical research. With this in mind, write a letter to a
state governor giving your opinion on an issue related to corrections that we
have discussed in class. You are not required to actually send this letter,
although you may want to.
You may be writing to agree with a current policy or procedure or you may
disagree; either way, you must justify your statements with empirical
literature. You may use the lecture slides and text book to guide your
arguments but you must also use at least 3 empirical research studies from
peer-reviewed journals to strengthen your arguments. Use examples, think
critically about current correctional practices/issue and be aware of your
audience -politicians are generally well-educated, but not necessarily in the
field of criminal justice; thus academic language is encouraged but some of
your points may require a more thorough explanation.
You must properly reference any ideas or information that was not your own
using APA-style referencing!!! I will be very strict on proper referencing and
will not tolerate plagiarism of any kind.
I want it to be a letter expressing how incarceration does not rehabilitate
many inmates. In doesn't meet all the needs of people being sentenced and does
not prepare them properly to be reintegrated back into society. Mentally ill
inmates are not getting what they need.
