In Module 1 you selected an example of resident microbiota.

In Module 1 you selected an example of resident microbiota.

In this Module, selected another resident microbe from "Chapter 2: Host-Microbe Interactions" in A Concise Manual of Pathogenic Microbiology, that can cause disease in humans.

1. Discuss the germ theory of disease.
2. Describe the human diseases which are produced by the pathogenic microorganism selected. Does it exist in a non-pathogenic state as well? Under what health condition can the disease be produced?
Include in your discussion:
•The differences between eukaryotic and prokaroytic cells.
•Three phenotypic systems used to classify microbes.
•Use the classification system discussed to classify each microbe selected in Modules 1 and 2.

Please upload your M2 SLP when it is completed.

Recommended format:

Module 2 - Structure and Evolution of Microbes
• Introduction: Prokaryotes, Eukaryotes and the three pheontypic systems used to classify microbes
• Organism 1, classification
• Organism 2, classification
• Comparisons and contrasts, pathogenic vs non-pathogenic states, opportunistic or symbiotic?

Note: A "PR" grade will be assigned to SLP Module assignments where critical thinking is not an important factor. The "PR" grade means "Progress"; however, in practical terms it means that the student's work is satisfactory.

Your assignment is due by the Monday following the end of this Module. Please upload your case assignment.

Session Long Project Assignment Expectations

Length: Each module SLP should be approximately a minimum of 2-4 pages or approximately 500 to 650 words.

References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g. peer-reviewed journal articles). Required readings are included. Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and also listed at the end of the assignment in the References section (preferably in APA format).

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to question

Format: APA format is recommended (but not required) for this assignment. See Syllabus page for more information on APA format.

Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted, assignments are expected to adhere to standards guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity.

The following items will be assessed in particular:
•Relevance (e.g. all content is connected to the question)
•Precision (e.g. specific question is addressed. Statements, facts, and statistics are specific and accurate).
•Depth of discussion (e.g. present and integrate points that lead to deeper issues)
•Breadth (e.g. multiple perspectives and references, multiple issues/factors considered)
•Evidence (e.g. points are well-supported with facts, statistics and references)
•Logic (e.g. presented discussion makes sense, conclusions are logically supported by premises, statements, or factual information)
•Clarity (e.g. writing is concise, understandable, and contains sufficient detail or examples)
•Objectivity (e.g. avoid use of first person and subjective bias)

Anatomy of endochondral versus intramembranous bone growth

Prepare a 2-3 page paper in which you:
1.Provide a discussion of the normal anatomy of endochondral versus intramembranous bone growth
2.Describe the pathological (disease) processes involved in achondroplasia, and answer this question: Why do individuals with achondroplasia have a normal sized head but abnormally proportioned limbs?
3.Discuss how bone remodels throughout life and the healing process of a fracture.

NOTE: This assignment will require you to engage in independent research to learn about achondroplasia and bone growth and repair throughout life. I have provided some resources for you on the ebrary bookshelf to get you started. Begin your research by looking through the following books: Bones and Cartilage: Developemental Skeletal Biology, Growth Plate, and Human Growth and Development. Look up terms that you do not know, take notes, and assemble these notes INTO YOUR OWN WORDS. Copied text will receive a failing grade.

Assignment Expectations
Format
Remember that all of your work should be prepared using appropriate format. This link from your course syllabus page will help reinforce formatting expectations: http://www.trident.edu/files/Well-Written-Paper.pdf

Scholarly Content

Your SLP and your case assignments are considered scholarly works. Your final work should include a MINIMUM of 10 peer reviewed (scholarly) sources. This does not mean that you must place 10 peer reviewed sources in each module of your Case/SLP. I anticipate that the nature of the questions which must be answered in this project will result in the accumulation of more than 10 references, but 10 is the minimum number. This means by the end of module 5, I should be able to go back and count AT A MINIMUM a total of 10 scholarly-peer reviewed publications in all of your submitted papers. If you are uncertain what a peer reviewed (scholarly) source is, go to http://www.csuchico.edu/lins/handouts/scholarly.pdf .

ORDER YOUR CUSTOMIZED PAPER NOW!!!

Please keep in mind that you should not use sources such as “Answers.com” or “Wikipedia” or “Wikianswers”. None of these are scholarly sources and they can be “modified” by any registered user which makes it unreliable. It could very well be that those who modify subjects in Wikipedia have a very good knowledge of the subject, however, since we have no way of knowing their credentials or intentions, we cannot guarantee that the source is reliable. It is a good place to start, but should not be used as factual in graduate writing. For graduate study, be sure to stick to peer reviewed journals and scientific sources. If you are having trouble finding a place to begin, try the References, or Bibliography, section at the end of the chapters in your assigned readings or ebrary books. The books on your ebrary shelf are all scholarly references as well.

The following site will help: http://www.csuchico.edu/lins/handouts/scholarly.html

Appropriate Headings and Paper Flow
Remember that you are preparing a formal academic paper. Your paper should make use of appropriate headings and subheadings. You should not cut & paste the questions posed and answer them like a “Question and Answer” session. Your finished paper should read like an academic paper.

Read about the topic of "neonatal and post-neonatal mortality" and write a paper about this topic and the differences in rates in 3 different ethnic groups (ie. Caucasian, African-American, Latina) in the United States.

How do these ethnic groups compare with regards to the risk for neonatal mortality? Discuss factors that contribute to the differences in rates?

Provide a list of sources used at the end of your paper.

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS: Please read before completing assignments.

Assignment should be 2-3 pages in length (double-spaced).
Please use major sections corresponding to the major points of the assignment, and where appropriate use sub-sections (with headings).
Remember to write in a Scientific manner (try to avoid using the first person except when describing a relevant personal experience).
Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is on independent thinking and critical analysis). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others.
When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be properly cited. This means that material copied verbatim must be enclosed in quotes and the reference should be cited either within the text or with a footnote.
Use of peer-reviewed articles is strongly recommended. Websites as references should be minimal.

The following items will be assessed in particular:

1. PRECISION: Each of the questions of the assignment is specifically addressed in the paper.

2. CLARITY: The paper reads clearly (i.e., it is not confusing) and is well-structured.

3. BREADTH: The paper presents appropriate breadth covering the questions of the assignment.

4. DEPTH: The paper presents points that lead to a deeper understanding of the matters and/or issues being discussed and integrates several points into coherent conclusions.

5. CRITICAL THINKING: You set aside your own personal biases and instead approach the subject matter using available scholarly evidence. You consider the strengths and weaknesses of competing arguments/perspectives on this topic. Having read these scholarly sources, you make a judgment as to the merit of the arguments presented therein.

6. REFERENCES: A reference list is provided at the end of your paper (APA formatting not required, but preferred).

Keep in mind that "A" papers are truly exceptional works that go beyond simply answering the questions
