Sacred space in either Buddhism or Sikhism using Smith's distinction between arbitrarily located sacred space and sacred space that is established at the site of an important ideological event.

Length: The paper length should be two to three pages. Be sure that the paper is double-spaced. Please use a "normal" font (i.e., Times, Arial) set at size 12.Format: A paper that does not properly employ Chicago Style footnotes will automatically be dropped by one letter grade.Sources: NO OUTSIDE SOURCES!!! All of the needed sources have been posted above. The Strong book is entitled The Buddha, and the Smith book is entitled To Take Place. The others should be clear.Do not discuss the names of the authors or the titles of any of these texts in your paper unless you are specifically criticizing someone's presentation. That information will be in the footnotes as well as the bibliography.

Do not include it in the text. Try not to talk about people believing things. For example, say, "According to Buddhism, this is a sacred sapce because of what happened there." Do not say, "Buddhist followers (ick!) believe such and such."What to Assume: The reader has a basic understanding of Buddhism & Sikhism. Do not explain how they began, what the term means, or anything like that. What to Avoid: A paper is not a list of facts. You must have an argument. Also, try to avoid informal terminology. The TopicThe basic idea is that you want to have a conversation about sacred space in either Buddhism or Sikhism using Smith's distinction between arbitrarily located sacred space and sacred space that is established at the site of an important ideological event. Please follow the outline below. The OutlineTitle Page - See sample paper for format.Introduction – Lead the reader into the subject matter with a "hook." The introduction should feature your thesis; you must make an argument.Body (Part I) – Explain Smith's typology of sacred space. Use footnotes (not in-text citations) to document your sources.

Use examples to demonstrate your understanding that draw from your own experience (i.e., that does not involve Buddhism or Sikhism). Use footnotes (not in-text citations) to document your sources.Body (Part II) – Give Buddhist or Sikh (pick one) examples of the two forms of sacred space.Body (Part III) – Break down the typology in this section in some way. Give an example from Buddhism or Sikhism that cannot be easily categorized using Smith's typology. Or, give an example that has qualities of both. Or, demonstrate the weakness of the typology in some other manner. Conclusion – Reflect upon and evaluate your findings. Creatively interpret your analysis. What does this all mean? Note: These findings should be reflected in your thesis, which many scholars write at the end of the process.Bibliography – Please look up the Chicago version of a bibliography. Note that you must use footnotes (also Chicago style) and a bibliography. Please look up the details by searching: "Chicago style citations." etc.
